Calorie Counting - A Pointless Exercise?!?

So, yesterday was Day 1 of Counting Calories.
Now I’m no stranger to dieting, having spent (or invested?) a small fortune on Weight Watchers/Slimming World/Rosemary Conley over the years but I am really struggling with straight-forward calorie counting.
It’s just so complicated ………
When following the Weight Watchers plan, I can drink as much tea and coffee as I like (provided I count the milk), and Marmite has no WW Points at all, so if I feel the need, I can bathe in the stuff (not literally, you understand!)   Who knew a cup of tea has 23 calories and I now have to count Marmite!  What’s that all about!?!?
Even the healthy stuff eats into your daily calorie allowance, and who wants to waste their daily allowance on the healthy stuff?   On Weight Watchers it’s all FREE – Pointless.  Priceless!!!!
I’ll give it a bit longer, but can see a calorific dividing line appearing at ChezNic:  one of us counting calories and one reverting back to the comfort blanket of good old WW Points.
And once this bout of tonsillitis has left the building, I WILL be back in the pool – the more lengths I do, the more wine I can drink on a Friday night .....
Now there's logic!

  1. Deev,
I started last night ,and I can see what you mean, why do they do it .
why change something when it's not broke ,when I've been to WW in the past your well into it and doing well and you go one week and all change.
I think in the end we all seem to tweek it and work it in the way it's best for ourselves .
Good Luck anyway and keep it up ,I don't stand much hope for myself ,really went as Helen started and I wanted to support her .

  2. Hi Bids

We're trying to do our bit from home, rather than go to a slimming club. Himself firmly believes in calorie counting but I just can't get my head round it.

I saw that WW had changed its format, but if I do revert back to Points, I'll do it the way I know - I've still got all the shopping guide/eating out guide etc from yesteryear!

If we both do the same thing, it'll make life easier at home. But I have my doubts about this counting calories malarkey!

    We'll see .... x x x

  3. Hi Deevs

    Loving your me-blog.

Mid 90s I went to Slimming World, then became a consultant for 4 years. So whenever the pounds creep on, I revert. It's comfortable. Alternatively - for a quick fix - One day on/One day off. Eating. that is. (assuming in good health)

  4. I quite fancied being a WW Consultant but you had to get to goal AND maintain before they'd consider you - a challenge too far!

I've been looking at a home study course to become a nutritionist, which looks really interesting. Just need to win the lottery to pay for it!

  5. You could do that now. Allow WW to train you. If it's anything like the SW training I had, nutrition is covered in some depth.

Just noticed the time stamp on these posts. Would seem we are posting in the wee small hours.
    :^)

  6. well as you know I lost two stone in about 8 months

excercise 3 times a week, sensible food intake on a veggie diet and a whole lot of stress, which makes me unable to eat.

however trying to maintain an even weight now with a husband who needs to put on weight and therefore can eat what he likes is very difficult indeed

  7. Deev ,I know just what you mean about counting points ,I certainly don't like this new pro points system and the I dont like the format .
The thing is all of us that have the misfortune to have to watch our weight know just how hard it is to loose weight and also know how very easy it is to put on.
We all know what we should be doing and really do try ,it's just that we like food we like the finer things in life and all that goes with it .
What the problem is we expect to live the good life seven days a week and by then it's taken its toll.
Oh!!! well just off to fill my glass that is empty ,and that is within my PRO POINTS .LOL.

  8. LOL Bids - you fill that glass!

I've had some chocolate tonight and STILL have 228 calories left to use! Alcofrol out of the question though, thanks to the antibiotics. Luckily, I finish those on Friday so can have my usual Friday night grown-up grape juice!

  10. I aim for a bout 500 calories for lunch - so thats like a premade sandwich from the local supermarket (or maybe less calories if I get it from the canteen). Then dinner I try and aim about the same but if I'm the only one home the good habits go out of the window and dinner can be 6 jaffa cakes in front of the TV. Then again at that point I was ill and eating was a bit beyond me lol.

  11. P.s. My Aunt used to do WW and go on about how wonderful it was - she is now on a permanent diet to maintain that weight.

  12. Hi Han

I'm using an onlinesite called myfitnesspal.com - you can track your progress and keep a food diary online (although being a Luddite, I'm also keeping an old fashioned diary using a pen and pad!). It recommends I have 1490 Calories a day.

Tips from friends have included cutting out bread, so I'm trying to avoid it Mon-Fri. I think I need to gen up on my WW recipes (lord knows I have enough WW cookery books!) and sort out lunches - Ryvitas as OK for a while but I know I'll get bored of them eventuially!)

Not done any exercise this week due to the tonsilitis, and giving yoga a miss tonight as I keep going a bit woozy - I think it's linked to sinuses being blocked ...

    So far, so good though!
